John Locke
Mohawk High School is located on State Highway 231 just north of Sycamore and about 14 miles south of Tiffin, Ohio in Wyandot County. Poltical Science 200: Liberal Democracy in America is offered as a year-long dual-credit course to a select number of Juniors and Seniors who have demonstrated high levels of academic performance and self-discipline, leadership, and citizenship. In keeping with Kenyon College standards, great emphasis is placed on the seminar method of learning, and students engage in a challenging and stimulating course centered on extensive reading, writing, and speaking.
In addition to scholarship, students also commit themselves to ten hours of political or civic service to the community. Past classes have served as polling station workers and election judges, and some have volunteered to support local candidates in their campaigns.
Mohawk's KAP students are challenged, but also know how to have a bit of fun. Every other Friday is set aside to a political coffee house featuring coffee, donuts, and discussion of the week's critical political issues. And once each year, we celebrate "April is the Best Month Day," a tradition begun in 2008 when it was discovered that the majority of students and the instructor all had April birthdays (not to mention that 6th generation native Texan Mr. Stobbs celebrates San Jacinto Day on April 21st.
Mohawk KAP graduates have gone on to study in some of Ohio's and the country's most prestigious post-secondary institutions. Each year, one student is recognized for academic excellence, citizenship and leadership with our John Locke Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Past recipients include:
Mr. Clay Hoerig, Class of '07 (Wright State University)
